(If you run and check the site, and go "Hey wait, those aren't the dates of the festival?" Please note that's how much we were being pulled for to come down and screen the film. They had already made their decisions and added us to the list, they kinda essentially just added a weekend on to their festival for just us. We are totally apart of the festival and running in conjunction with it, doing a Q&A, the whole shin dig.)
Cortney Armitage, Earthnoize and the Fort
Lauderdale International Film Festival Presents the South
Florida Premier:Tribal Style: Becoming a Belly Dancer!
Saturday October 13, 2007 @ 8PM
Admission: $10

Tribal Style: Becoming a Belly Dancer, a 90 minute documentary,
will profile four novice dancers as they go from their first
classes to performance. Through interviews with professional
belly dancers in the tribal community, we will draw parallels
to the novice's own stories: finding their strength, facing
doubt, and ultimately discovering her own inner peace and
beauty. We will aim to document not only the novice, but belly
dance as a whole: What it means to be a belly dancer to the
person dancing, and the positive impact it has on the people
dancing it.

This Documentary features performances & Interviews By:
Rachel Brice (BDSS, Indigo), Frederique David (Belly Groove),
Carolena Nerriccio (Fat Chance bellydance), Nanna Candelarida
(Belly Dance by Nanna), Beth Masse & Sue Erokan (Clandestine),
Andrea, aka Andy (The Miz-Healers), Karen & Bethany (The Boom
Bellas). Featuring sensational music by members of Solace.

http://www.igctribalstyle.net/Site/Trailer.html

But wait! There's more!
Director & Producer Cortney Armitage will be on hand to
introduce the film and then afterwards, a Q & A about the making
of the documentary.

Cortney Armitage (Producer & Director) has been learning to
belly dance for 5 years. This has been one of the biggest
challenges of her life considering she has worked as Layout
Artist at Pixar Animation Studios since 2000. But that's not
all, while she was still in school at the prestigious Laguardia
High School of the Music and Arts and Performing Arts she
started her career at the age of 17 on the hit MTV show Beavis
& Butt-Head. While getting her degree at New York University
TISCH School of the Arts, she worked as a graphic designer on
the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.

More to be announced so keep checking back!!
Thanks!

Thank you for dancing before the show and really giving the screening a sense of occasion.
It was really nice to know that what I captured was truly the essence of our experience and I'm so happy to know now that we really really all share it.
I've started a new tribe, The Great Turtle Race!

If you don't join that's really okay, please check out the site, the turtles are going faster then you think... They may only have 10 years left.

So here's the 411 :

Eleven leatherback turtles are swimming across the Pacific Ocean to the Galapagos Islands in a "race" that will be tracked online to draw attention to the plight of the endangered creatures.

The turtles have been tagged with satellite communication devices that give their positions as they head south from their nesting sites on Costa Rica's Playa Grande beach to feeding grounds near the Galapagos, about 950 miles away.

Online participants can choose a turtle and track its course at www.greatturtlerace.com from April 16 with the winner being the animal that travels furthest in two weeks of swimming.

There is no prize for the winner of the race, aimed at highlighting the dangers facing a creature that has graced the oceans for 100 million years.

I've noticed that the documentaries from Filmmakers Library and Women Make Movies are about 20-25 minutes in length. That seems really short, but they seem to promote them as being for "classroom" use, so I guess there's something magic about that length for the classroom market. But is the classroom market a "good" one for videos about our dance form? What other markets (other than the belly dance community) would find a documentary about our dance form interesting?

I just makes me feel good. ;)

By CHRISTY LEMIRE, AP Movie Critic

NEW YORK - Truth hasn't just been stranger than fiction this year; it's been better, with documentaries emerging as some of the strongest — and best-reviewed — films so far.

Granted, we're not even halfway through 2006 yet.

But every year, starting in January — the notorious dumping-ground time for films — my Los Angeles-based counterpart, Dave Germain, and I keep a running tally of contenders for top-10 list status come December. At the end of an average year, I'll have to scrap two or three titles; last year, I had to slash my list in half, the offerings were so solid.

It's a good problem to have.

This year, I've noticed, nearly all the films on my possible top-10 list are documentaries: "Dave Chappelle's Block Party." "Neil Young: Heart of Gold." "The Heart of the Game." "The War Tapes."

Similarly, when people ask me what they should go see, I might grudgingly suggest that they check out "The Da Vinci Code," if only because it's a ubiquitous pop culture phenomenon, and they should at least see to be able to trash it knowledgeably, right? But I really hope they seek out one of these documentaries, instead — which may be hard to find wherever they live, if they're playing in their cities at all. (Thankfully, some of them are already out on DVD.)

The other movie on the list thus far — one which I heartily recommend, and it's been a tough sell — is the devastating "United 93." I know of maybe one person who's really wanted to see it, but it's the only feature of 2006 that's moved me. Then again, it's based on true events — how passengers on one of the four planes hijacked on Sept. 11 fought for control of the aircraft before crashing into a Pennsylvania field — and it's shot with a documentary's pure, fly-on-the-wall perspective.

Apparently, I'm not alone in this sentiment. One look at the highest-rated movies on the Rotten Tomatoes Web site reveals some familiar titles.

"The War Tapes," in which filmmaker Deborah Scranton handed digital video cameras to New Hampshire National Guardsmen and told them to shoot everything they did and saw in
Iraq's Sunni Triangle, is ranked No. 2 so far this year with 95 percent positive reviews. (No. 1, in case you're curious, is "Iron Island" from
Iran, which played in limited release for just a few weeks in April.)

"Dave Chappelle's Block Party," which chronicles a hilarious, joyous rap concert the comedian staged in Brooklyn, is the third-highest with 93 percent.

Coming in at No. 7 with 92 percent is "The Heart of the Game," about the girls' basketball team at a Seattle high school and their eccentric coach. Right behind that is "United 93" with 90 percent — the same amount of critical praise lavished on "Neil Young: Heart of Gold,"
Jonathan Demme's warm, intimate concert film, featuring Young performing songs from his new album, "Prairie Wind," as well as some old favorites.

Meanwhile, over at Metacritic.com, "United 93" is the top film of the year so far with a score of 90. And in second place is "L'Enfant," the Belgian film that won the top prize at Cannes last year about a small-time crook and his girlfriend who unexpectedly become parents. It also has the stripped-down, hand-held feel of a documentary.

The Young and Chappelle films are up high at Metacritic, too, as is "Street Fight," the Oscar-nominated documentary that followed the mayoral race in Newark, N.J.

Then there's "An Inconvenient Truth," about
Al Gore's crusade to warn the world about global warming, which also ranks high on both Web sites. (Germain liked it better than I did; I thought it was scary as hell but left you feeling helpless, and ultimately played like an extended campaign ad for a possible presidential run in 2008.)

Opening this week, though, is another documentary that's sure to please critics and crowds alike: "Wordplay," about New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz and his various followers, from former
President Clinton to New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina.

It's reminiscent of "Spellbound," the Oscar-nominated 2002 documentary that tracked a group of competitors in the National Spelling Bee — not just for its verbal subject matter, but also because both introduce us to people who often feel like misfits but have found a common bond, a comfort zone, with each other.

Which brings us to a logical question: What is it about these varied films that makes them stand out?

Like any great documentary, they vividly and viscerally show us a world we might never have known about otherwise. They engage us, make us laugh, make us think and move us.

"March of the Penguins," for example, which won the Oscar this year for best documentary feature, takes us to a place that most of us would never want to go: Antarctica, with its 70-below temperatures and its 100-mph winds, all of it crisply, grandly shot.

Or perhaps these films strike a familiar chord instead: If you played basketball in high school, or even just on the playground as a kid, you might relate to the intensity and camaraderie of "The Heart of the Game."

Maybe you've been able to finish the Sunday Times crossword puzzle, in ink — maybe you can't get past Monday — but either way you'll understand the fun the "Wordplay" fanatics experience in challenging the brain.

Similarly, these movies poke and prod us and change us in a way that no big-budget summer blockbuster ever could — because they're real.

It was screened and I got some great feed back.
Then I took the feed back and went into hiding.
Digested and came back and realized that indeed there
was a way to make it even better.

I think that I have found a way to tell a story that transcends belly dance.
It is now a story that everyone can relate to and it just happens to be in the
world of belly dance. Now you might be thinking that's not good. But
I really believe in my heart of hearts that this is the right direction go. I think
that if someone connects to this story that may have been doubtful or skeptical
they are more likely to be open to the dance as a moving a powerful art form.

The documentary is now becoming the more universal story of "Hey guys didn't you hear!
The band is getting back together!" It's a story of trying to rekindle something from the past
but discovering along the way that it can never be the past but what you've created inthe
process is something different and just as special.

So the web site is now wrong and I should update that ;)

I believe that this is a movement that is about to come into it's own and it
is such a tremendous feeling to know that we will all be able to say that
we were there when!

Of course, I'm all a-twitter about the documentary itself, and Andrea's evolution as a dancer (which mirrors my own in eerie ways), but I'm equally excited about MORE Rachel. She truly communicates with the music- her vocabulary is her body and she's got entire chapters waiting to be wriiten via her absorption and expression of said music.
And when the percussion demands a shimmy, it's almost as if she's in perfect shimmy-bondage until the next heavy downbeat. Again, all I can say is WOW!

I've found out a lot of things in the past month about festivals and how they work.

1- The festival cycle starts with The Sundance Film Festival Which is in January.
This is the Big Cahunna, you get in there, it's pretty WOW, you know.. So that is
the Moon, and that is what we are shooting for...

2- Festivals like Sundance have a contingency... If you are to show there, it has to be
as the premier. Meaning, no other audience has viewed this movie in it's entirety in a
theater with paid admission. Also meaning viewed at other festivals.

3- But once we know what the deal is we can go crazy after that...

This REALLY puts me out in some regards. Because, this means that I won't be able to show the film until I know if the project has made it into these festivals. TOTAL BUMMER.

So there are some work arounds that I'm looking into, but ahhh, there it is. Not the greatest news
but I don't make the rules I can only make say they are ridiculously stupid.

The best advice that I have gotten from every filmmaker that I have met is, wait. Even if you're done, sit on it and wait. Good news is we are not done so there's more time... okay I'm reaching...

So we wait.

But just think, we'll have this great surprise present for the world to open up when it's ready.

Today we are not just an independent feature, we are a
FINANCED Independent Feature. That means that there
are some people who don't know us that believe in us, a lot.
That makes us the little engine that could,

That doesn't mean stop buying teeshirts. I have no use for

Last night I had a screening for some people that are very good at making movies. And after we had some really great conversation.

They gave some great comments. Some really great comments. So the good news is from these comments we might make a really really good movie. Bummer, it's kind of back to the drawing board on some fronts.

The winds of change are always strange but so is the journey of belly dance.

So I pose a challenge to those reading this. Answer these three questions...

What is YOUR definition "Tribal Style"?
What does your tribe mean to you?
What does the phrase "Tribal Style" mean to you?

Best answers will be in the movie. GAME ON!

The Release Date & Updates on Production...

--------------------------------------------------
What's in this post:

1) The Release Date (ie When the movie is coming out )
2) Updates on production.
3) Will there be a soundtrack?
4) Sum Up...
--------------------------------------------------

1) The Release Date ~ Once there is a rough edit, aiming for end of March, THERE WILL BE SCREENINGS!

As for DVD release date, I'd like to get this on the festival circuit and yes, my hopes are for a theatrical release. This means that to actually buy the dvd it all depends on how much attention that the film receives in that time, the more it receives the more that will be pushed but the more accessible it will be for you to see your friends, hero's and families 20 feet high and finally receiving the much do recognition that they deserve. ;)

2) Updates on production ~ Well, I still have one last final interview to do and that's all.

as of this past weekend THE EDITING PROCESS HAS BEGUN! I started to make dubs of my master tapes the long log and capture process will begin on the interviews that will make the up narrative story. I had an amazing woman come over and school me in all the things that I need to know to make this technically correct for the edit process. I have a very clear vision of what I want to tell the story, so hopefully what's in my head will translate to the screen in a good way ;)

All 165 hours of footage are out of the closet!

3)Will there be a Sound Track... Hell to the Yeah! I believe that it is indeed Jeremiah Soto's intent to put together a Sound Track.

4) Sum Up...

As for when you all are going to be able to start seeing it, some time after the end of march...

The editing has begun.

Yummy sound track yes!

thank you for your patience and your interest in the project lord knows that it wouldn't be possible with out you guys

But, as is an inevitable event, we are discussing what we want out of the whole bellydance thing, and the different paths it will take us down. I really want to pursue Tribal, and start to perform...but being a 51 year old woman (her name is 'Lanola' on my profile) ...my mother feels that Tribal is really made for younger women, and not as older gal friendly as Cabaret. I showed her some of the clips on the website of older women doing some incredible things, and she was impressed. I really hope that it opened her eyes and that she will stick with me. I don't want to leave her behind in classes. I don't want to perform without having my mommy there with me. I don't want to digress down different paths, with her being Cabaret and me being Tribal, just because she feels like Tribal is a younger woman's dance.

Thank you for having examples of older women that show her she CAN do this with me.

Maybe someday, someone will make a documentary specifically for older women who have never had a dance class in their lives. ;)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Five organizations involved in documentary films will next Friday release a manifesto of sorts titled "A Documentary Filmmakers' Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use," which will set out guidelines under which filmmakers can make use of copyrighted material without being subject to often exorbitant licensing fees.

Growing out of a study conducted last year by American University professors Pat Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi, the statement should provoke discussion that will be of far more than just academic interest.

The report comes from the University Film and Video Assn., the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, Arts Engine, the PBS series "P.O.V." and public television's Independent Film Television Service.

Fair-use practices -- which have been upheld by the courts as a way of balancing the extension of copyright protections -- are a matter of established practice in the print media. One publication can quote from another, within reasonable limits, without violating copyright. But in the visual media, the practice of licensing rights has evolved into a complicated morass. Filmmakers, when they want to include a clip from a news broadcast or another film, are often asked to license not just the clip itself but also various underlying rights -- say, for example, the music rights to a tune that happens to be playing in the background when a film crew is shooting in a real-life study.

In their initial study, Aufderheide and Jaszi found that for many filmmakers, licensing rights has become not just an expensive proposition but also an inhibiting one. Citing dozens of examples, they contend, for instance, that the budget of Jonathan Caouette's homemade 2004 documentary "Tarnation" ballooned from $218 to $400,000, "using most of the eventual budget to clear rights."

Since rights are often licensed for fixed periods, further problems pop up when they must be renewed. Henry Hampton's "Eyes on the Prize," a study of the civil rights movement, is now out of circulation because it originally purchased five-year licenses and renewing them was prohibitive.

More ominously, the researchers found that problems with right clearances are even leading some filmmakers to self-censorship. Jeffrey Tuchman ("The Man From Hope") said that he had shelved a project on politics and the media because rights issues had become "so extortionate."

The authors concluded, however, that the whole issue of fair use is widely misunderstood in the film arena, and that distributors and networks often reflexively ask for clearances as a condition for releasing or airing a film even though under fair use, the clearances aren't actually necessary.

They did not call for any new legislation -- and even cautioned against challenging established fair use doctrine in court. Instead, they argued that fair use is more available to filmmakers than is generally recognized and so there needs to be an industrywide discussion about fair use practices.

Over the past year, Aufderheide and Jasci have continued to meet with filmmakers around the country to develop the statement.

"This is designed specifically to be nonconfrontational," Aufderheide says of the statement. "We want to reduce the level of ambiguity and signal the availability of this right. It's about the reinforcement of the legitimacy of existing law."

After all, the filmmakers whose input helped define the statement are, or aspire to be, copyright-holders themselves. It's in their interest to strike a balance that allows them fair use of existing materials when creating their own original works, while also protecting their work from anyone who might want to make unfair use of them in the future.

What a way to go...

http://www.crimelibrary.com/terrorists_spies/spies/hari/7.html?sect=23

As Mata Hari stirred and blinked at the group that had intruded into her cell, Bouchardon firmly announced, “Have courage! Your request for clemency has been rejected by the President of the Republic. The time for expiation has come.”

“It’s not possible!” Mata Hari shouted. “It’s not possible!”

Two kindly nuns who had come to be fond of the prisoner in her months of incarceration attempted to comfort the distraught woman. She composed herself and told a nun, “Don’t be afraid, sister. I shall know how to die.”

Indeed she did. Mata Hari faced death bravely, walking with her head high and refusing the customary offer of a blindfold. The prisoner saw twelve rifles pointing at her. She blew a kiss at her killers. The order was given, the shots rang out, and she was dead. A bullet had found her heart.

In the years following Mata Hari’s death, the dancer-turned-courtesan and just barely turned-spy became a legend. She has been portrayed onscreen by Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Sylvia Kristel, and Jeanne Moreau. Some, usually the uninformed, take seriously the prosecutor’s flamboyant description of her as “the greatest woman spy.”
